[Update on 11th October 2023] The data of ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’ has been replaced by new data measured in 2023. The 2023 version of ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’ is thicker and heavier, and as the result more elastic, than the 2018 version whose data has been used for comparison so far.

Note : Strictly speaking, the ‘new version’ of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ in this article is the third version, and the ‘former (original) version’ is the second version that replaced the first version in 2016. Therefore the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is mentioned as ‘New Hurricane Long 5’ in some articles on internet forums written in 2016~2018.

DHS ‘Hurricane Long 5’ has been one of the bestsellers of table tennis blades. It is the blade developed for Chinese player Ma Long, who is the king of table tennis in 2010s. (The blade that is actually used by Ma Ling is a special-order version. But, the special-order version called W968 is also based on the ordinary version. Adjustment of many factors – for example the thickness of a layer, the weaving method of fiber, the size of head or handle and so on – is done for satisfying the requirement of a specific player.) ‘Hurricane Long 5’ has already been covered by TTGearLab, and its characteristics have already been well known by many players because it has been sold for long time. However, TTGearLab noticed that the fiber of current ‘Hurricane Long 5’ produced from 2022 is different from that of the former (= original) ‘Hurricane Long 5’. Therefore, in this article TTGearLab will observe the difference between the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ and the former (= original) version by Performance Indices, and will check the actual difference between two versions in actual playing at table tennis court.

1.  Overview

Fig.01 DHS Hurricane Long 5 MY 2022

‘Hurricane Long 5’ is the inner ALC version of ‘Hurricane Long’ series that is the blade family for Ma Long. Together with ‘Hurricane Long 3’, ‘Hurricane Long 5’ has been the representative models of DHS blade range. The appearance of new ‘Hurricane Long 5’ produced from 2022 is basically identical to the former version produced until 2021. Light blue colored handle with yellow colored arc, inlaid metal pattern at the backside of handle, blade surface without any pad printing and the metallic colored printing on the transparent plastic cover are same as those of old version.

Fig.02 Blade construction of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ MY 2022

The artificial material of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is Arylate Carbon so called ALC. The color of arylate fiber is yellow. (DHS doesn’t call this artificial material as ALC because it is the registered trademark that can’t be used by the maker other than Butterfly in global market.) DHS is basically using two kinds of Arylate fiber – blue one and yellow one. And, the yellow one is more elastic than the blue one. This ALC is placed between the middle layer and the center layer. The top layer is Limba, the middle layer is Ayous and the center layer is also Ayous. Overall thickness is around 5.9mm.

Fig.03 The handle of new ‘Hurricane Long 5’

The design and the shape of handle is same as that of old (= original) version. For shakehand grip, only FL (flared) handle is available. We can’t select ST (straight) handle. The width of FL is 25.7mm at the narrowest point and 34mm at the end. The height (thickness) of handle is 22.7mm at thumb and 26.1mm at the end. This FL handle that is thin and narrow at its middle point lays more emphasis on freedom than the firm grip. However, it doesn’t give the player uneasy feeling because it is thick at the end.

Fig.04 The plastic lens on the foreside of handle

Like the other DHS blades, relatively short and wide plastic lens is inserted at the foreside of handle. This lens is identical to that of original version. (Nothing except for the fiber has been changed.)

Fig.05 The rounded plastic lens at the end of handle

There is rounded plastic lens at the end of handle. Inside the lens, the photo and the signature of Ma Long is printed. We can distinguish the new version from the original version by the contrast of the photo of Ma Long. The contrast of new version is higher.

Fig.06 The inlaid metal pattern of dragon head at the backside of handle

On the backside of handle, there is inlaid metal pattern of dragon head. The dragon head means that this is the blade of ‘Hurricane Long’ series. (The Chinese character ‘Long’ means dragon.)

Fig.07

The size of head is 159mm (length) x 150mm (width). It is about 2mm longer than standard size of Butterfly. The average weight of measured pcs. is 88.1g.

2.  The difference between the new version (MY 2022) and the former version

Fig.08 New white card included in the box of new ‘Hurricane Long 5’

A card that indicates the characteristics of each piece is included in the packaging of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. Originally the color of that card had been red for long time. However, the color for the new version is white. TTGearLab hasn’t checket yet the exact timing that the change was applied, but estimates that the color change at the same time with the change of weaving method of ALC was done in early 2022.

Fig.09 The new version (upper) and the former version (Lower) shown from the top

Above picture shows the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ that was produced in September 2022, and the former version that was produced in May 2020. Picture is viewed from the top of the head. The picture shows that the fiber of new version is different from that of old version. (TTGearLab hasn’t checked yet, but the ones produced in 2021 are assumed to be also the former version.)

Fig.10 The side edges of the new version (upper) and the former version (Lower)

Above is the picture of the side edges of the new version and the former version. The fibers of two blades in the picture look different from each other.

Fig.11 The difference of weaving method between the original version and the new version

The left of above picture is the weaving method of the ALC for original version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. It uses Arylate fiber in the vertical direction and carbon fiber in the horizontal direction. This one provides relatively lower elasticity and relatively shaper feeling. This kind of ALC is also used for ‘Hurricane 301’. And the right of above picture is the weaving method of the ALC for the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’, and both of Arylate fiber and carbon fiber are arranged in both of horizontal and vertical directions. This weaving method provides relatively higher elasticity and a bit milder feeling. This kind of ALC is also used for ‘Hurricane 301X’. (The W968 version for Ma Long also uses the ALC of similar weaving method. But, TTGearLab hasn’t checked yet whether it is identical to that for new version of ordinary ‘Hurricane Long 5’ or not.)

It is assumed that DHS replaced the ALC with different one for increasing the power of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. TTGearLab will observe the characteristics of new ‘Hurricane Long 5’ by Performance Indices, and will compare it with old version and some other blades.

3.  Performance Indices

Performance Indices are measured objective values to represent the characteristics of table tennis gears. Concerning the detail of four performance indices, please refer to following articles in ‘About TTGearLab’ section :

The performance indices of new ‘Hurricane Long 5’ (MY 2022) are as follows:

Hurricane Long 5 MY2022 (average weight = 88.1g)

                    Ep = 1.68

                    Ec = 1.50 (Ec/Ep = 0.89)

                    Vp = 1.16

                    Vl = 1.26 (Vl/Vp = 1.09)

‘Hurricane Long 5’ is an inner-fiber blade of standard type, and its Ep is in the expectable range. Ec is noticeably lower than Ep. Because Ec/Ep is lower than 0.90, it holds ball deeply when player hits the ball very strongly. But, not extremely deeply.

The Vp of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is 1.16. Because it isn’t that high value, we can expect that the primary feeling of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ isn’t hard. And, its Vl (= 1.26) is higher than Vp, but not extremely higher. So the Vl/Vp is still in ‘near uniform’ range (0.9 < Vl/Vp < 1.1). The feeling transferred to the index finger is relatively sharper than primary feeling, but not extremely sharper.

We can first compare above values with the Performance Indices of original ‘Hurricane Long 5’ produced before 2022.

Fig.12

And, following is the Performance Indices of original version.

Old (Original) Hurricane Long 5 (average weight = 88.2g)

                    Ep = 1.64

                    Ec = 1.24 (Ec/Ep = 0.76)

                    Vp = 1.06

                    Vl = 1.27 (Vl/Vp = 1.20)

The Ep of the original version is smaller than that of the new version (= MY2022), but the difference isn’t significant. We can expect that the new version will be a bit faster than the original version in light hitting. However, there is big difference in Ec. The Ec of the original version is significantly lower than that of the new version. Differently from that of the new version, the Ec/Ep of the original version is extremely low. So the original version holds the ball much more deeply than the new version when the player hits the ball very strongly.

The Vp of the original version is noticeably lower than that of the new version. So the new version is harder than the original version. But, there isn’t meaningful difference between the Vl of the original version ant that of the new version. It means that the absolute feeling transferred to the index finger is not that different. However, the distribution of the feeling throughout the blade became smaller by the modification. Players who are sensitive to the relative feeling or the distribution of feeling will feel that the original version gives much sharper feeling at index flinge.

It is expected that the new version (= MY2022) will provide higher power in the rally by topspin against topspin, and in the situation that the higher speed required for finishing rally. The new version may satisfy the players who has used the original version but has felt that the power for topspin rally isn’t sufficient.

And, it is expected that the new version will not be better in case the player plays with very aggressive topspin that aims at very early timing. However, even in that situation new version may be better if the player concentrating on ‘dragging’ ball by small racket angle.

The comparison by graph will help us to further understand the difference between the new version and the former version.

Fig.13 The former version (left) and the new version (right)

4.  Comparison by Performance Indices

Then we can compare the new (=MY2022) version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ with the former (= original) version and some other blades by graphs. Two inner-ALC blades of standard type, two inner-ALC blades of high-speed type and two pure wood blades have been selected for the comparison.

Following is the list of the blades to be compared :

Inner Fiber blades

  • Butterfly ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’ 2023 version (avg. weight = 91.2g) : The standard of inner-ALC blades. (newly measured in 2023)
  • Xiom ‘36.5 ALXi’ (avg.weight = 87.1g) : Inner-fiber variation of Xiom ‘36.5’ series.
  • DHS ‘Hurricane Long 5X’ (ave. weight = 87.6g) : Thicker and faster than ‘Hurricane Long 5’.

Pure wood blades

  • Butterfly ‘Korbel’ (avg. weight = 88.7g) : The standard of 5-ply wood offensive blades.
  • Butterfly ‘Korbel SK7’ (avg. weight = 87.1g) : The 7-ply wood blade of reduced speed for topspin.

4-1. Elasticity Indices

Fig.14 Comprison by Elasticity Indices

Fig.14 shows the comparison graph of Elasticity Indices.

Ep (Primary Elasticity Index) is directly concerned with the rebound speed of blade. Ec (Central Elasticity Index) is concerned with additional ‘kick’ when player hits ball very strongly.

The Ep of the new version (= MY 2022) of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is a bit higher than that of the former (= original) version. The increase of primary elasticity is probably because of the vertically arranged carbon fiber of the new version. (The reason why the amount of the increasement isn’t big is that the gap between the fiber layers is small due to the inner-fiber construction.) On the contrary, the Ec of the new version is significantly higher than that of the former version. We can expect that the new version will provide noticeably stronger additional kick when player hits the ball very strongly. That is the most important difference between the new version and the former version we can observe.

The first group to be compared is ‘Inner ALC’ group. Among three models in this group, one model – ‘36.5 ALXi’ –shows similar Ep’s as new & old version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. But, the other two models – ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’ & ‘Hurricane Long 5X’ – show much higher Ep’s than both of the new version and the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. Also the Ec of ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’ is higher than those of two version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. However, the Ec of ‘Hurricane Long 5X’ is just a bit higher than that of new ‘Hurricane Long 5’. If we observe the relationship between Ec and Ep, it looks like that the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is closer to the other inner ALC blades, when compared with the former version.

The second group is ‘pure wood’. The Ep’s of the blades in this group is lower than those of the inner ALC blades. But, the Ec’s are higher than that of the former ‘Hurricane Long 5’. We can notice the distinct uniqueness of the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. Its central elasticity is even lower than that of ‘Korbel’ which is a 5-ply wood blade.

Examining Ec/Ep is an easier way to understand the characteristics of blade concerned with elasticity. Fig.15 shows the relationship between Ec/Ep and Ep.

Fig.15 Ec/Ep vs. Ep

Ec/Ep expresses the ‘tendency’ of the elasticity of blade. By examining Ec/Ep and Ep at the same time, we can easily understand the behavior of blades.

On the graph, all blades (except for reference blade) in this comparison are in ‘Hold’ range (Ec/Ep < 1.0). And, the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ can be grouped together with ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’, ‘Hurricane Long 5X’ and ‘36.5 ALXi’ into the ‘Inner ALC’ group, while old version is located at much lower place than ‘Standard Inner ALC’ group. That is the point that distinguishes new version and old version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. The former version holds the ball very deeply when the player hits the ball very strongly. New version also holds the ball deeply under the same situation, but not as deeply as the former version. The former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is a very unique blade that provides extreme level of ball hold. On the contrary, the new version isn’t as unique as the former version. As an inner-ALC blade, the characteristics of the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is relatively normal.

The former version can easily be compared with ‘Korbel’ because it provides higher Ep and lower Ec/Ep when compared with ‘Korbel’. There will be some players who feel that the speed level of the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ isn’t much different from that of ‘Korbel’. On the contrary, the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ will be noticeably faster than ‘Korbel’. If the player wants to anyway increase the power, the new version can be a good replacement of ‘Korbel’. However, if the player requires faster blade but at the same time wants to keep the level of Ec/Ep of ‘Korbel’, ‘36.5 ALXi’ may be better choice than new ‘Hurricane Long 5’. And, if the player seeks even higher elasticity while keeping the Ec/Ep of ‘Korbel’, ‘Hurricane Long 5X’ will be the solution.

When compared with the blades in ‘Inner ALC’ group, new ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is not as elastic as ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’ (2023 version) or ‘Hurricane Long 5X’. But, it is as elastic as ‘36.5 ALXi’ and gives more kick. Therefore, if the players likes the inner ALC blade of standard speed level but requires a bit higher power, new ‘Hurricane Long 5’ will be the optimum solution. Also, if a player thinks that current version (2023 version with 5.9mm thickness) of ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’ is too fast but it gives optimum level of kick/hold, it will be meaningful that the player try new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ once.

Then next, let’s compare Vibration Indices.

4-2. Vibration Indices

Fig.16 Comparison by Vibration Indices

Fig.16 shows the comparison graph of Vibration Indices. Vibration Indices are concerned with feeling. Vp indicates primary feeling which is transferred to player’s palm. And, Vl is the feeling at the edge of the wing – the lower side of blade head. It is felt by player’s index finger or middle finger.

The new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ (= MY 2022) provides noticeably higher Vp than the new old version. However there isn’t much difference between the Vl’s of the former version and the new version. (And, the Vp of the former version is slightly higher than that of the hew version.) It means that that the replacement of the weaving methos of the ALC of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ mainly affects the primary feeling, and doesn’t have a significant effect on the lateral feeling. The new version is much harder than the former version. However, the players will not feel that the new version is harder, because the feeling transferred to the index finger isn’t that different. (Further, if the player is sensitive to the ‘relative’ feeling, the new version will feel even softer or milder than the former version.)

In ‘Inner ALC’ group, ‘36.5 ALXi’ shows very similar data as that of the new ‘Hurricane Long 5’. However, we can observe that the vibration characteristics of ‘InnerForce Layer ALC’ is totally different from those of new & old ‘Hurricant Long 5’. The Vp of ‘Hurricane Long 5X’ is a bit higher, but its Vl is much higher, than the values of the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ respectively.

In ‘Pure Wood’ group, the graph of ‘Korbel’ is similar to that of old ‘Hurricane Long 5’. It means that ‘Hurricane Long 5’ provides similar feeling as ‘Korbel’ which is a 5-ply wood blade. And, the graph of ‘Korbel SK7’ is closer to that of ‘Harimoto ALC’.

Examining Vl/Vp is an easier way for the comparison of the tendency of feeling. Fig.17 shows the relationship between Vl/Vp and Vp for easier comparison.

Fig.17 Vl/Vp vs. Vp

On the graph, all blades (except for reference blade) in this comparison are placed in upper parts of the graph – ‘Relatively sharper at finger’ range.

New version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is placed close to ‘36.5 ALXi’. When compared with former version, new ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is much closer to ‘Inner ALC’ group. New version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ and ‘36.5 ALXi’ lies on the border between ‘Near Uniform’ range and ‘Relatively sharper at finger’ range (Vl/Vp = 1.10). Those two still give relatively sharp feeling at finger when compared to primary feeling transferred to palm.

Differently from the new version, the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is placed at the position far from ‘Inner ALC’ group. Instead, it is placed quite close to ‘Korbel’ which is a 5-ply wood offensive blade. Its Ep is much lower than that of a blade in ‘Inner ALC’ group, and its Ec/Ep is even more extreme than that of ‘Korbel’. It is the uniqueness of the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’.

The new version and the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ are totally different from each other. When compared with the former version, the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ gives noticeably harder feeling, and its distribution of feeling is much less extreme. It is expected that there will be many players who welcome the new version, because the less uniqueness means the more ease of adaptation. However, some players will regret that the new version lost the own characteristics of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ – ‘the inner ALC blade whose feeling is very close to that of 5-ply wood blade’.

Fig.18

5.  Field Test

TTGearLab checked the difference between the new version and the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ by brief testing at table tennis court. The testing wasn’t an intensive one, and not many kinds of rubbers were combined. DHS ‘Neo Hurricane 3’ and Butterfly ‘Glazer’ was combined for most of the testing. The result may vary if other rubbers are used or the long-term testing is performed. (But, TTGearLab doesn’t expect that the result will significantly vary.)

The first impression is that the new version gives different feeling when compared with the former version. The feeling of the new version is clear and sharp, but not as clear and sharp as the former version. The former version gives the feeling that is quite close to that of the 5-ply wood blades such as ‘Korbel’, but the new version doesn’t. When compared to the former version, new version seems to be closer to 7-ply wood such as ‘Clipper CR’. And, sometimes the new version gives softer feeling than the former version, although it gives more support to the ball. Some players will think that the feeling of the former version is too biased or too extreme, and doesn’t like it while the other players will like its uniqueness. Anyway, the feeling of the new version is also very good. It is soft, natural and clear. But, not as unique as that of the former version.

The difference of the elasticity is noticeable from the rally by light strokes, although there isn’t big difference of Ep’s between two blades when we observed the result of the measurement. Probably that is because even the light hitting is influenced by the Ec of the new version which is much higher than that of the former version.

Contrary to the expectation from the ball speed of the light strokes, the new version doesn’t make the trajectory of the ball that long when the close-to-table topspin is performed. Instead, the new version provides better ability of precise control than the former version. And, when the high loop is performed, the new version provides the feeling that the ball sticks to the surface of racket. Therefore, in most of situations, the ball control of the new version at close-to-table area is really good. On the contrary, when the topspin is performed at mid-distance area, the trajectory of the ball drawn by the new version is noticeably longer than that by the former version. And the block by the new version is more precise than the former version. So with the new version, it is easy to mix the block and the counter-topspin when the player return the opponent’s topspin, while the former version seems to be specialized for counter-topspin. The new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is the blade that is easy to use various skills at various playing area, while the former version is the blade that is focusing on a specific skill at limited playing area. Although the new version is more elastic than the former version, it is expected that the majority of players will think that the new version is easier to use than the former version.

The new version provides better result than the former version when the player hits the ball by thin racket angle. For that reason the backspin of push by the new version is heavier than that by the former version. And, the precision of the stop has been also improved from the former version. The trajectory of the flick by the new version is shorter than that by the former version, but the new version puts the ball heavier rotation. Therefore, when performing flick with the new version, the player needs to concentrate more on spin rather than being conscious of speed.

The characteristics of the field testing is largely in line with what is expected by the Performance Indices. But, both of the new version and the former version are soft blades those are good for topspin. For that reason, it is expected that what most players will feel is only the difference of the power of ball unless they use both simultaneously and directly compare those two versions.

Fig.19

In general DHS blade makes very good combination with the Chinese sticky rubbers such as ‘Neo Hurricane 3’. And, it is also the case with the new version of ‘Hurricane Long5’. In case ‘Neo Hurricane 3’ 40° (= 52~53° in German standard) is attached and the ball is hit at a large angle at close-to-table area, the harder feeling of the new version may be a bit uncomfortable, while the former version always gives comfortable feeling. (This is a subjective assessment of our testers, so other players may not feel it that uncomfortable.) The solution is to hit the ball at a smaller angle and focus on dragging the ball. And, if the player takes a step backward, even hitting at a large angle doesn’t give any uncomfortable feeling. For that reason, at mid-distance area the player can put more power to the ball by opening the angle of racket. So the trick to adjustment from the former version to new version when using Chinese sticky rubber is to focus more on spin by closing the racket angle at close-to-table area, and to focus on power by opening the racket angle at mid-distance area.

The combination of the new version and non-sticky rubber is easy, because the new version isn’t that extreme as the former version. Although the former version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is the blade that is very easy to use, the rubber should be carefully selected for getting the best result if the rubber is a non-sticky one. However, the player can just focus on the characteristics of the non-sticky rubber itself if the blade is the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’, because the characteristics of the new version is more universal than that of the former version.

Below is the testers’ opinions on the two verions of ‘Hurricane Long 5’. Differently from the former test reports, the result of each tester isn’t separately indicated, instead the average value of testers is indicated for each version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’.

6.  Summary

Due to the change of the weaving method of artificial material, the new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is very different from the former version. The difference is summarized as follows :

  • In the ALC of the new version both of the carbon fiber and the arylate fiber are arranged in both of vertical direction and lateral direction, while the ALC of the former version has vertically arranged arylate fiber and laterally arranged carbon fiber. This difference results in the big difference between the characteristics of the new version and that of the former version.
  • The new version of ‘Hurricane Long 5’ is more elastic than the former version. The increase of the Primary Elasticity Index isn’t noticeable, but the Central Elasticity Index has been significantly increased.
  • The feeling of the new version is harder than that of the former version. The Primary Vibration Index has been increased by around 10% from the former version. On the contrary, the Lateral Vibration Index has been slightly reduced from the former version.
  • The new version is close to the other inner-ALC blades, while the former version isn’t. As an inner-fiber blade, the former version of is an extremely unique one. The former version is very close to the 5-ply wood offensive blade such as ‘Korbel’, but the new version can be considered as a typical inner-ALC blade.
  • The power when the player plays at mid-distance area has been significantly improved at the new version.
  • The former version is better for the extremely aggressive topspin that aims at the rising of the ball. On the contrary, the new version is good for various playing style. the former version provides better feeling and safety for very aggressive topspin at close-to-table area, although the new version is also good for that kind of strategy.
  • But, the new version provides better precision and safety of on-table technics such as push and flick. The block by the new version is safer and more stable than that by the former version. The block of the former version isn’t as good as that of the new version because the former version is more specialized to counter-topspin than block.
  • The new version makes very good harmony with various kinds of rubbers – especially non-sticky tension rubbers, while the former versions is specialized for the combination with very hard Chinese sticky rubbers. Of course the combination of the new version and Chinese sticky rubbers is very good, but it requires more skill of the player.

Fig.21 New Hurricane Long 5

One good point of the new version is that it is closer to the special-order version (= W968) that has been use by Ma Long. The former version is too different from Ma Long’s blade and that has been one of the reason why there have been many players who have sought for W968. The weaving method of the ALC for the new version is now similar to that of Ma Long’s W968. Of course it doesn’t mean that the new version is 100% same as Ma Long’s W968. There may be some differences for example pitch between fiber bundles or the density of fiber in a bundle. Or the thickness of a layer of overall thickness may be a bit different. However, at least the biggest reason for the difference – different weaving method – is now gone. Therefore, it is expected that players will be more satisfied with the new version.
