Butterfly ‘Falcima, released in March 2022, is a 5-ply wood blade with reasonable price for entry or middle class players. Butterfly is explaining that this blade is excellent in the balance between high elasticity and good stability, and the player can easily make powerful ball because the appropriate weight of this blade make it easy to increase swing speed. ‘Falcima’ is recommendable for the players who want to use moderately fast blade but doesn’t like artificial fiber blades.
‘Falcima’ is the new entry-level 5-ply wood blade in Butterfly’s blade range. However, in keeping with the current trend, the elasticity of ‘Falcima’ is made higher than that of the past entry-level 5-ply wood blades of Butterfly.
The construction of ‘Falcima’ is a 5-ply wood construction. The top layer is Koto. The middle layer is also Koto, and it is thicker than the middle layers of ordinary 5-ply wood blades. Center layer is Kiri, which is softer and lighter than Ayous. Overall thickness is around 6.0mm.
The size of head is around 157mm x 150mm.
The shape of FL (flared) handle is basically same as that of ‘SK’ series (e.g. ‘SK Carbon’) or ‘Timo Boll CAF’. In other words, it is different from the Butterfly standard FL (for most of Butterfly blades including ‘Timo Boll’ series and ‘InnerForce Layer’ series) or Butterfly semi-wide FL (for ‘Viscaria’, ‘Fan Zhendong’ series and so one). The width is around 26mm (at top) ~ 27mm (at bulge) ~ 26mm (at narrowest section) ~ 34mm (at the end), and the thickness is around 23mm (at thumb) ~ 24mm (at the end). Although it appears thick in terms of size, it is somewhat slim when held because the cross-sectional shape is more shaved than the typical FL handles of Butterfly. ST (straight) handle is not available for ‘Falcima’.
At the foreside of head, the product name and simiple information are printed.
Nothing is printed on the backside of head.
The nameplate at the foreside of handle is a thin & long transparent plastic lens which had been applied for ‘Kreanga Carbon’, ‘InnerForce ALC’ and so on. The same type of lens is also applied for ‘Timo Ball CAF’.
Small rounded plastic lens is applied at the backside of handle.
Squared aluminum plate with Butterfly logo is applied at the end of handle.
‘Falcima’ (left) and ‘Xstar V’ (right). Two models are 5-ply wood blades with reasonable price for entry-level players. ‘Falcima’ is an offensive blade with relatively higher elasticity, and ‘Xstar’ is an all-round blade with relatively lower elasticity.
‘Falcima’ (left) and ‘Xstar V’ (right). Both blades are 5-ply wood blades, but their constructions are significantly different from each other. ‘Falcima’ is a 5-ply wood blade with a somewhat unusual construction whose top layer and middle layer are Koto, while the construction of ‘Xstar V’ is a typical thin 5-ply wood all-round construction with Limba top layer.
‘Falcima’ (left) and ‘Xstar V’ (right) are the blades for entry-level players. The players who don’t have sufficient budget will also be able to consider these blades. ‘Falcima’ is recommended for the players who lay emphasis on speed, and ‘Xstar V’ is recommended of the players who lay emphasis on safety and stability.
Following are the performance indices of Butterfly Falcima (avg.weight = 86.4g) :
– Ep = 1.72
– Ec = 1.53 (Ec/Ep = 0.89)
– Vp = 1.18
– Vl = 1.31 (Vl/Vp = 1.11)

Thanks a lot!Don’t you have an interest to test Nittaku Latika? Also Neottec Voodoo Classic is very attractive blade in my opinion. I have one of them and like it. So it is very interesting to see its measured values.

I don’t have those blades. But, I will get some Nittaku blades sooner or later. If Latika is a good blade, I will seriously consider it.
And, it seems that it is difficult for me to get Neottec blades.

Hi, do you think viscaria handle is thicker than falcima? Does falcima have more vibrations in your palm and finger or less than viscaria?

You’ll feel that Viscaria handle is thicker than the handle of Falcima. That is because of the difference in the shape of cross section. The cross section of Falcima handle is closer to diamond shape and for that reason the length of the circumference of Falcima handle is shoter than that of Viscaria handle.
Falcima makes bigger amplitude of vibration than Visciara. But, the frequency of the vibration of Falcima is lower than that of Viscaria.

Thanks for sharing the detailed information and the nice pictures!
I wonder how the new Hadraw 5 compares to Falcima. Both have Koto outerplies, but Hadraw5 has spruce instead of koto as second layer. Both are interesting blades.

Still I can’t say anything clearly because I haven’t measured Hadraw 5 yet. But, the clear difference between Falcima and Hadraw 5 is that Hadraw 5 has classic construction but Falcima doesn’t.
Hadraw 5 can be considered as the traditional offensive blades for close-to-table topspin. It isn’t optimized for hitting (smashing). Continuous but aggressive topspin will be the best way of using Hadraw 5.
But, Falcima is made in consideration of hard hitting. If you frequently use smash, Falcima will be better choice than Hadraw 5.
Hadraw 5 : Aggressive topspin
Falcima : Topspin (not so aggressive) + Smash
