DHS ‘Hurricane 301Z’ is the new model added to ‘Hurricane 301’ series. ‘Hurricane 301’ series is the family of inner fiber blades with dyed Koto top layers. So far the major characteristics of ‘Hurricane 301’ series compared to standard inner fiber blades has been the higher elasticity when player hits the ball lightly. Therefore, with ‘Hurricane 301’ series, the players of lower level can play more easily thanks to the higher speed of ball. However, new ‘Hurricane 301Z’ seems to aim at different goal. ‘Hurricane 301Z’ fits for the playing style that the players hit the ball more actively with there own power instead of relying on the high elasticity of the blade.
The artificial material of ‘Hurricane 301Z’ is new Z carbon (= ZC) which includes Z fiber that provides bigger deformation and more transparent feeling than existing aramid/arylate fibers. From the letter ‘Z’ we may think of ‘Zylon’, but DHS isn’t saying that it is Zylon or PBO fiber, but just explaining that it is enhanced aramid (or arylate) fiber. There is the fiber whose initial is Z but it isn’t Zylon, for example Zxion which is a kind of arylate fiber.
Nothing is printed on the head of the high-class models in DHS blade range. Instead the printing is applied on the transparent plastic cover. The graphic design of handle is different from those of existing models of ‘Hurricane 301’ series.
‘H301’ series is the family of inner-fiber blades whose top layer is dyed Koto. Middle layer is Ayous, and ZC is placed under the middle layer. (Still we don’t know whether the ‘Z’ means Zylon or not. There is possibility that it is Zxion.) Z fiber is arranged in the vertical direction, and carbon fiber is arranged in the horizontal direction. Center layer is softer than ordinary Ayous that is used for the other models in ‘Hurricane 301’ series. Overall thickness is around 5.8mm.
The graphic design of handle seems to be motivated by the letter ‘Z’. It means newly applied Z fiber.
Because of the new design theme, the handle looks quite different from thos of ‘H301’, ‘H301X’ and ‘H301T’.
Differently from the rounded transparent plastic lens of existing blades of ‘Hurricane 301’ series, logo panel made of meta (probably brass) is applied at the end of handle.
On the back side of blade, there isn’t any lens or printing.
Serial number is printed on the right side of handle. BCXDAA means 230411. This blade is the one that was produces on 11th April 2023. (Final character ‘F’ means that this blade is the one that was produced after June 2020.)
Now there are four models in ‘Hurricane 301’ series – ‘Hurricane 301’, ‘Hurricane 301X’, ‘Hurricane 301T’ and ‘Hurricane 301Z’ from left to right.
Following are the performance indices of Hurricane 301Z (avg.weight = 88.2g) :
– Ep = 1.64
– Ec = 1.36 (Ec/Ep = 0.83)
– Vp = 1.11
– Vl = 1.24 (Vl/Vp = 1.12)
Please note that above are average values and can be updated by further measurement.

Hello !
Do you have the Ep, Ec of both regular 301 and 301x as well ?
Thanks for all !

Yes. I will also post the article on four models of DHS H301 series. (Not including field testing just because I don’t have time to test them at court.)
Following is the data :
H301 (89.6g) : 1.88/1.64(ratio 0.87)/1.20/1.29(ratio 1.07)
H301X (89.9g) : 1.98/1.86(ration 0.94)/1.28/1.27(ratio 0.99)
I hope that above data is useful for you. Please note that there is always difference by piece. So my data isn’t 100% reliable. Please just use my data as a rough reference, and avoid strict comparison. (The comparisons on this home page are also rough ones.)

Thanks a lot for your reply !
I currently play the h301 for 3 monthes now and so I can now “place/translate” my feeling in numbers !
Do you have the pitch (frequency) of both 301 and 301x you mentionned ?
Thanks !

It will be all right if you compare vibration indices – Vp and Vl. Those two are directly related with frequencies.

Hi, dhs 301z is supposed to be faster than 301, but according to your figures 301 is faster than 301z. Is that correct?

Right! Your question is very important question.
The elasticity of H301Z is noticeably lower than that of H301. I was astonished when I measured H301Z and got the indices. I think that it is because of the softer center layer of H301Z. In general the center layer of inner fiber blades is Ayous. Softer Kiri is used for inner fiber blades only in case those blades are thicker than 6.0mm. However, the thickness of H301Z is just 5.8mm, and its center layer is Kiri. Then it can’t be more elastic than H301 unless much more elastic fiber (for example woven carbon fiber) is used.
But, it doesn’t mean that you can’t make faster ball with H301Z. Former models of 301 series are the blades those raise the speed of the ball by their own elasticity. However, H301Z is the blade that raise the speed of the ball by the power of player, like HL5. I expect that professional players will prefer H301Z to the other models of H301 series. On the contrary, starters who can’t hit the ball strongly but want to make faster ball don’t like H301Z. For those players, ‘301T’ or ‘301X’ are recommended.
By the way, TT makers sometimes change the specification of equipment without notice. Therefore I can’t guarantee that current thickness and elasticity of H301Z will be kept in the future. We may be able to see thicker and faster H301Z in the future which is faster than H301T.

Thanks for the clarification. I used to have H301. It had great touch and feeling, but the control specially on the power shot was not good. Do you have the indices for H301T? How is it different from H301z, which one do you recommend for an intermediate player?

The data of H301T is as follows:
DHS Hurricane 301T (average weight = 90.7g)
Ep = 2.05
Ec = 1.87 (Ec/Ep = 0.91)
Vp = 1.28
Vl = 1.23 (Vl/Vp = 0.96)
It is definitely different from H301Z. H301T is close to H301X. A bit faster but thinner.
H301T is also the blade that makes the powerful shot by the elasticity of blade.
But, H301Z is the blade that makes the powerful shot by the power of player.
I think that you will be able to select between H301T and H301Z.

Thank you! I will do that. By the way does a deep hold characters of a blade and its softness feel is related to each other? If not what does it mean exactly?

I have just posted it. 🙂
Deep Hold isn’t directly related with soft feeling, although many blades with soft feeling also provide Deep Hold characteristics.
Table tennis blade has many factors related with various kinds of feeling. For example factor A, factor B, factor C an so on. And, for calculating the indices related with feeling I use factor A and factor B. But, for calculating hold/kick characteristics, I use factor A and factor C. Because different factors are used, sometimes there is clear difference between Deep Hold and softness.
